- Follow ABCs of safe sleep for every sleep: Alone (no co-sleepers, pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals), on Back, in a bare Crib with a firm flat mattress and fitted sheet only. This applies to all sleep including naps until age 1.
- Maximize light-dark contrast: Expose your baby to bright natural light within 30 minutes of morning wake-up and throughout the day; dim lights to below 50 lux starting 1-2 hours before desired bedtime and use only dim red/amber light for nighttime feeds.
- Establish a consistent 15-20 minute bedtime routine by 6-8 weeks (bath, feed, book, song, place in crib drowsy but awake). Consistency of sequence matters more than specific activities.
- Offer a pacifier at every sleep onset after breastfeeding is established (typically 3-4 weeks). Do not reinsert if it falls out during sleep. Do not force if refused.
- Use a ceiling fan or room fan (not blowing directly on baby) during sleep to improve air circulation in the sleep space, maintaining room temperature between 68-72°F (20-22°C).
- If pumping breast milk, label with time of expression and try to feed time-matched milk (morning milk in morning, evening milk in evening) to preserve circadian signaling via melatonin and cortisol content.
